What is the Pacific Inklings Festival?

The Pacific Inklings Festival (PIF) is the gathering of our entire Southern California C.S. Lewis Society. All three chapters meet at a common location in the springtime for our general meeting. We’ll take care of a bit of business, then get on with enjoying food, drink, guest speakers, and more.

PIF is named in honor of the original Inklings, who were fellow writers and friends of C.S. Lewis. (They are pictured further down on this page).

Take a look at a few past PIFs…

Every PIF is unique in content and all of them celebrate the work of Lewis and the Inklings.  Past speakers include, Dr. Scott Key, Sorina Higgans, Dr. David Downing and Dr. Crystal Downing.  Attendees come away from the event with new knowledge about some of the greatest literary minds of the 20th Century.

2019 PIF Keynote Speaker

Pictured above, Sorina Higgins, (far right) was our keynote speaker and her topic was: “The Inklings Among Other Arthurs”.

2019 PIF Awards

Pictured above from right to left: Dr. Diana Glyer of Azusa Pacific University was awarded the first Paul F. Ford Award for excellence in Lewis scholarship and teaching.

Our Director, Dr. James Prothero (center) presented the awards.

Society Secretary, Edie Dougherty, won the first Golden Lion Award for service.

With Covid-19 still looming in May of 2021 we held our PIF online via Zoom. Our guest speakers were Dr. David and Dr. Crystal Downing (pictured right).

Dr. Crystal Downing discussed her newest book, “Subversive”. The book is about one of Lewis’s good friends, Dorothy Sayers.

Sayers is an interesting, dynamic personality. She was an author who Lewis’ admired, not only for her sill as a writer, but for her courageous presentation of the Christian Faith. Her writing, at the time was considered controversial  in many Christian circles.

When reflecting on the Inklings, Lewis said;

“Is any pleasure on earth as great as a circle of Christian friends by a good fire?” He added, “What I owe to them all is incalculable.”

Who Were The Inklings?

The Inklings were an informal group of writers, started by C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. The group met weekly for 17 years during the 1930s and 40s. Members read and critiqued one another’s “works in progress.” In total, as many as 19 men cycled through the group.

They often held their meetings at a local pub called the “Eagle and The Child” – more often referred to as the “bird and the baby.”  (pictured below).
